January’s Bach’s Lunch concerts features our very special guest\, pianist Hugh Sung. \nHugh Sung has been hailed as one of the finest collaborative pianists of his generation. Hugh has performed and recorded with the likes of violinists Aaron Rosand\, Hilary Hahn\, and Leila Josefowicz; flutists Julius Baker\, Jeffrey Khaner\, Jasmine Choi\, and Gary Schocker; and composers Jennifer Higdon\, Robert Maggio\, and Harold Boatrite. He has also worked extensively with the Philadelphia and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. Hugh served on the faculty of The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia for 19 years as its Director of Student Recitals and Instrumental Accompaniment. \nIn 2008\, Hugh co-founded AirTurn\, a company that creates hands-free page-turning pedals for digital sheet music. \nIn 2014\, Hugh joined the roster of ArtistWorks\, the premiere online music and art school that teaches students through an extensive video curriculum combined with the innovative Video Exchange system\, enabling him to work one-on-one with students anywhere in the world. \nHugh continues to perform around the world\, and currently serves as the Director of Institutional Solutions for Cunningham Piano\, representing Yamaha and Bösendorfer pianos.

At age seven\, Melba fell in love with a big\, shiny trombone\, and soon taught herself to play the instrument. By the time she was a teenager\, Melba s extraordinary gift for music led her to the world of jazz. She joined a band led by trumpet player Gerald Wilson and toured the country. Overcoming obstacles of race and gender\, Melba went on to become a famed trombone player and arranger\, spinning rhythms\, harmonies\, and melodies into gorgeous songs for all the jazz greats of the twentieth century: Randy Weston\, Duke Ellington\, Count Basie\, Billie Holiday\, and Quincy Jones\, to name just a few. Brimming with ebullience and the joy of making music\, Little Melba and Her Big Trombone is a fitting tribute to a trailblazing musician and a great unsung hero of jazz.

SUMMARY:Virtual Piano Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 13th Annual Community Music School Piano Festival will be virtual this year! Adjudications will take place on Saturday\, March 6\, 2021 via ZOOM. This will be another performance opportunity for your child and a goal for the winter season – great for practice motivation! \nEach student will play two memorized pieces of music for our guest adjudicator and will receive a trophy or ribbon (depending on the rating given by the adjudicator) as well as written comments on his or her performance. Important: Students who perform their solo pieces for the festival adjudicator WITH music will not be eligible for the honors recital. \nStudents who receive the highest rating at the adjudication may be asked to perform on a special Festival Honors Virtual Recital on Friday\, March 19\, 2021 at 7pm via ZOOM. This is optional – it is not mandatory for those students asked to perform to do so – only if they wish. Please check the box on the Festival Registration form if your child would like to perform on the honors recital if selected. You will be notified by your teacher if your child has been selected to perform. \nThe cost will be $12.00 per student. Please complete the online Piano Festival Registration Form below and submit payment no later February 28\, 2021. Due to the nature of scheduling the individual adjudications\, we cannot accept registrations after the due date.
