Summer Programs

CMS offers music lessons and summer camps during July and August. Summer registration begins in May for current students and is open to new students beginning June 1st. Private lessons are billed at the prevailing rate. Please contact the Registrar about scheduling lessons and for information about teacher availability. Individual instrumental and vocal lessons are available July 9-August 10, 2018. Current CMS students may register for summer lessons beginning in May and new students beginning June 1st. Registration for private summer lessons is on a first come, first serve basis. Summer scheduling is flexible therefore; students should only sign up for lessons on dates they can attend. No refunds or make-ups will be given for missed summer lessons.

Come join the fun at Cello Fest!

Cello Festival Camp offers cello students an opportunity to have a focused week of individual practice, lessons technique and cello history classes, recitals, small and large cello ensembles, master classes, and a final concert on Friday. Students will learn skills in organizing their practice, developing and enhancing their skills in tone and intonation, and have the opportunity to work with multiple teachers throughout the week. Students may enroll for either a half-day or full-day session.

Introducing the Community Music School Youth Orchestra Camp!

This exciting new program is open to violin, viola, cello, and double bass students who want to expand their musical knowledge and skills by being part of an ensemble that cultivates young musician’s talents and inspires a passion for orchestral music. Under the direction of conductor Ian Shafer, students will learn not only about musical technique and expression, but also focused listening, cooperation, responsibility, and teamwork.

Skill Requirements:

  • All Strings: 2-3 octave scales up to 3 sharps/flats
  • Violins: Suzuki Book 3 & above or equivalent
  • Viola, Cello & Bass: Book 2 & above or equivalent

All applicants must have the signature of approval by their private teacher or school orchestra director on their camp application. A typical day at Orchestra Camp:

  • Morning arrival, announcements, tune up
  • Morning orchestra rehearsal – focused on the development of orchestral sound and intonation as well as working on the music

  • Exploring Music – a guided study of music through listening and discussion Sectionals with expert faculty
  • Afternoon orchestra rehearsal – a more “traditional” style rehearsal working on music

Student Ages 10-18 at Community Music School

A fun, week-long, interactive, summer day-camp program that encourages enthusiastic young musicians to explore and expand their interests in music through pop, rock, jazz, blues, funk and more. All instruments are welcome. Students will develop their “chops” through participation in a small combo, as well as the big band, comprised of all camp participants. Other activities include workshops on the history of jazz and rock, technical study, chart-reading and composition. Camp free-time can be spent playing games outdoors or indoors, reading or even … practicing!

Suzuki POP! students will build a violin out of everyday household items, sing and move with their instrument through a variety of activities building musical skills, learn to watch, listen and follow a conductor and learn more about the Suzuki method of music learning. At the end of the week, students will present a short performance to show off their instruments and what they learned during their week at camp.

Bravo! Musical Theatre camp is a fun and exciting opportunity for students ages 10-18 to learn about vocal technique, character development, blocking and choreography. During this week-long camp, students will work on casting, staging and rehearsing for a showcase performance on the final day of camp for family and friends.

The program helps students discover and develop musical artistry with emphasis through the “Suzuki approach” and “Traditional approach” to string playing. Activities include group classes, small ensembles, combined large ensemble, and musicianship enrichment classes. Advancing students are highly encouraged to participate in the full day program while beginners are encouraged to participate as half day campers.

Student Ages 8-18 at Community Music School

Students should have completed Level 2 in the Faber & Faber, Alfred, or John Thompson method books, or their equivalent (Aaron method book Level 1 is also acceptable). Students will have an opportunity for cooperative music-making and social interaction with other piano students of similar skill and ages. Students will also study music theory and aural skills, music history and listening, jazz improvisation and accompaniment skills depending on age and ability.

Full day – 2 track options:

Gold track: for advanced students, who are preparing for auditions, or possibly considering a music major or minor in college, with piano as the applied concentration. We will offer trainings on aural and written theory, history, as well as performance aspect of the major.

Blue track: for piano students, who would like to improve technique and musicianship, as well as exposure of composition and accompaniment skills according to the student’s level.

The CMS Audition & Practice Boot Camp is a week long event in which students participate in intensive sessions of practice, lessons, mock auditions, & workshops. This program emphasizes solo audition repertoire and excerpts common to Districts, Youth Orchestra, & College Auditions. In addition to repertoire and excerpts, this program will also heavily emphasize sight reading and scales. Audition & Practice Boot Camp welcomes strings, piano and wind players who are committed to advancing their technique and musicality.
