Music Enrichment Classes

CMS offers a variety of classes and ensembles that are designed to encourage students to expand their music skills and knowledge. These classes and ensembles may be taken alone or in conjunction with private instrumental or vocal study. Students need not be enrolled in private study at CMS to participate in a class or ensemble. However, for those students who are enrolled in private instruction at CMS, the first nine-week class or ensemble is offered at no charge! Registration is required. Contact the Registrar for more information or to register for a class or ensemble.
GarageBand
Using a computer and MIDI equipment, students learn to compose their own music with the help of the program GarageBand.

Intro to Guitar
Learn the basics of guitar playing. By the end of the nine-week class, students will have been introduced to reading notes on each of the strings, basic rhythms, time signatures, and basic chords with simple accompaniments. Students must bring their own guitar to class. Electric or acoustic is acceptable.

Intro to Voice
This class helps young singers begin to understand and incorporate the benfits of healthy vocal production through breathing and vocal exercises and age appropriate repertoire.

This class will help students prepare for auditions and hone performance techniques. There will be a performance at the end of each 18-week session.

This 30 minute class is perfect for young children who want to sing, dance andand improve their rhythm skills in a fun atmosphere.

Songsters
For young students interested in voice study and improving their basic musicianship skills. Note reading, rhythm practice and pitch exploration are some of the topics covered. The solfege system of sight reading is introduced with accompanying Kodaly hand signs. Students practice breathing and vocal exercises to emphasize proper breath support and vocal production. Students learn to apply these tools to repertoire appropriate for age and ability of the group.

Philosophy of Music
This class will explore the many ways the human mind can relate to music. Second quarter will deal with improving musical memory. Whether you have to memorize a piece for an audition, or competition, or if you just wish to have a deeper understanding of how your brain can work for you and not against you, then this class is for you. Student will learn a variety of methods to memorize music quickly and easily, and potentially be able to memorize 11 pages or more in a single day. ages 14 and over.

Song Pop
Want to learn how to write and play songs like Taylor Swift? Do you wish you had a better grasp on what your favorite pop artists are doing? Well then SongPop is for you. With a focus on guitar, students will learn chord progressions to some of their favorite pop songs, strumming patterns, methods of writing there own songs, and advice on how to play chords and sing at the same time. Become a Pop star today! All ages are welcome, student should bring their own guitar, and have some guitar background.

Studio Voice Class
Students will learn new repertoire and performance practices as they develop poise and self-confidence by singing for others in the class. Students may be assigned repertoire for duets and ensembles to be used in class.
