Edwina French founded Community School of Collegeville in 1991. Since that time
she has served as the school's Executive Director and has guided it's growth
from just a few dozen students to the more than 500 students that study music
at the school's Main Street location in Trappe.
Ms. French received her Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from the
Philadelphia Musical Academy and her Master of Music in vocal performance from
the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. Ms. French moved to
Collegeville in 1979. While raising two daughters, Ms.
French performed locally, maintained a home studio and taught voice at the
Settlement Music School in Germantown.
It was during this time that she began to formulate her plans to start a school
that would offer music instruction to area children and adults. Her experiences
as a teacher at the Settlement Music School and her childhood memories of music
lessons at the Peabody Prep in Baltimore are what the model of Community Music
School was based on.
In addition to being responsible for all fiscal and curricular aspects of
Community Music School, Ms. French continues to give vocal instruction to CMS
students and is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
